There seems to be a debate brewing that I am very anti-against this movie. I am not against this movie at all. I just didn't like the fact that people say this is What H.G. Wells, about. I find the movie entertaining in it's own way because of the special effects. I also liked Alexander and Vox when they first met... in 2030 and when they meet again in the cave. I also enjoyed The Time Travelling sequeinces... When Alexander went after his charm picture of Emma... (Bad move almost lost his arm: They should have aged his fingernails. ) I enjoyed the scenery of the Eloi... The river... The waterfall... The Windmill sequience... Even the Morlocks were cleverly made... This is a good movie... but it's BASED... On H.G. Wells, the Time Machine... It is NOT THE TIME MACHINE. I do recommend anyone to go see it... I also recommend them to buy the orginal novel and The 1960 George Pal film. I hope sincerely this settles any misgivings of what I think about this movie. I don't hate this movie at all. It is done beautifully for a story on it's own. I urge anyone and everyone to go see it. Sincerely, H.M. Holzman |

Posted At 20:52:19 03/16/2002 but they didn't seem to grow VERY long :) Anyway another thing I liked was some of the early interaction with Philby.... It's not like the 1960 format of friendship... but it was still pretty good... Especially when we go 4 years later after Emma dies... I thought it was well said by Philby... and I wish he would have shown Philby the machine. So Philby could have said don't play with this machine destroy it... etc... Just like in the book. But still it was a good scene. |

Posted At 22:16:22 03/16/2002 First, I'll also make MY point clear. I DO despise this movie because it exploits the name of H.G. Wells and his great work of literature purely for marketing purposes. It robs the non-reading public of today from a great story and an important message that was expressed by one of the great minds of history and replaces it with a weak meaningless mess of a story that was written in haste. READ and learn ! By the way, the interaction between Filby and the Time Traveller is in the David Duncan screenplay only, not in the book ! |

Posted At 22:42:21 03/16/2002 Francois that is correct about Filby to a Certain degree... Yes in Duncan's screenplay you are correct... but there was also interaction although brief... very brief in the Wells novel. |

Posted At 23:32:36 03/16/2002 I am refering specifically to your quote that Filby said "If that Machine can do what you say it can, destroy it before it destroys you... Just like in the book" There is no such line in the book. It is in David Duncan's screenplay only. In the book, Filby is one of the guests. He comments on the Time Traveller's exposé like do some of the other guests but does not have a special rapport with the Time Traveller. |

Posted At 00:21:40 03/17/2002 Francois Beaulieu is right in his estimation of the film - and Dreamwork's motivation. There are few people around today that know "The Time Machine" as well as he. As I see it, if you've already read the novel and choose to see the film you will understand just how much Hollywood underestimates its audience; almost to the point of contempt. For them to have removed the fundamental themes of the original Wells novel demonstrates (to me anyway) their willingness to sacrifice the very heart and integrity of a story in favor of their own version which is designed only to make money and be the lowest common denominator form of entertainment. It is truly a shame for them to have deliberately wasted such a prime opportunity. Charles Keller Webmaster, The H.G. Wells Societies Director, The H.G. Posted At 03:58:57 03/18/2002 I will mention that I am in total agreement with those statements in favor of H.G.Wells' original novel....it should have been the accepted basis of the new Time Machine film...not a side-tracked and mutated variation of his classic work! I have read the novel and have taken the journey many times.... and in retrospect, can honestly say that there is a definite reason for its designation as a CLASSIC! I just wonder what H.G. himself would say if he were alive to see this film...... The George Pal film of 1960, though a variation in its own right, is nevertheless an extension of Wells' idea....particularly the futuristic vision of the Eloi/ Morlock cultures. I feel as though I am in the future when I view the earlier film, not in some 'Neanderthal' world of the Cenozoic Era such as displayed in the present adaptation. It looks as though Mr. Pal's film, as well as the novel by H.G. Wells, have withstood the test of time! With the new "Time Machine," the future just "ain't what it used to be!!!" |

Posted At 08:40:07 03/18/2002 I have remained quiet for a few days... I just want to say I like the orginal novel because it is WELLS... And the Pal film reflects WELLS, intentions to... This new film... Only uses principals... 1. Time Machine 2. Eloi (name sake) 3. Morlock (name sake) The plot for this movie is entirely different from the orginal intent of the orginal novel. I will just say this movie is a great visual arts film... but to say this is about The orginal novel The Time Machine... Is still an insult to millions of fans who enjoy classic science Fiction... This movie should not have been called The Time Machine. Or at least a stronger disclaimer should have been put in place. |

Posted At 13:24:46 03/18/2002 A more appropriate title for this new movie should have been "The Time Waster". |

Posted At 22:58:34 03/18/2002 Being a huge fan of the 1960 version I did not have the nerve to go see this movie until yesterday 3-17-02. I have seen the 1960 movie and this version is not the classic. But,it stands on its own merit. It is a good movie. It, however is way too short. There was too much left out from the story telling point. Too many questions posed and not answered. CAN "DVD" SAVE THE FUTURE??? Only time will tell. |
