"The console was cut in half to retroproject the dates. It was probably discarded. The original chair was still in the Machine at the MGM auction. It was recognized as an antique barber chair by a later owner who sold it as such. There have been rumors that the current owner of the original chair knows it's origin and has tried to re-sell it as such." This is a quote from a few years back.Any other info on this? i read on the internet that a company called e-detective[not sure]has been hired to locate the chair!! I hope they let me know if they find it!! i would love to squander a few bucks on that!right ady? |

Posted At 23:57:43 04/09/2004 These posts are becoming repetitious in content... Frank rehashes stuff just to make his point, often quoting something that seems to go off in some erratic direction, having no relevance to the subject at hand. It is rather tedious to see most of his statements that go, quite literally, nowhere................................................................................................................................................................... |

Posted At 13:22:48 04/11/2004 Frankie...you're still here.... too bad! Your questions have no relevance in general... all you do is nitpick! It is rather trivial and it proves nothing, scholar! If anyone seems to be a bit out of it... the concensus is leaning toward you, Frank! |

Posted At 13:30:40 04/11/2004 To reply to Frankie's question: A) The Console: It was long assumed by many that the console was cut in half to retroproject the dates (more specifically: not literally in half, but cut open at the front). We believed that was why it had been cut off from the rest of the Machine at some point during the production. However, I found something that contradicts this while watching the DVD perhaps too "attentively" a few months ago. I was looking at the display just when the Machine makes its stopover in 1966 and noticed that the three lighted ovals are offset to the left. You can see them bleed over the brass rim. This of course means that the lighted coloured ovals with the dates were optically added to the image after production - consequently, there would have been no need to cut open the front. In view of this, the exact reason why the console was removed remains unclear. It's likely it was done just to take the close-up shots of it - even though the dates were added later. (It's easier than to try and set the large movie camera over the seat of the Machine.) As everyone knows by now, during shooting, there was a crude date "stand-in" in the ovals - one which can be seen on a few occasions in the movie. This means that the console probably remained whole and possibly in good shape (other than the melted lamp globes) before it was discarded (or put aside "somewhere"...) B) The chair: There is no doubt that the original chair was in the Machine when it was sold at the MGM auction. Don has amply documented this. When the Machine was found in the "thrift store" some years later, it is my understanding that it was in parts and that the chair had been previously sold by the dealer to someone who recognized it as a real Berninghaus chair. The buyer clearly had no interest in the Time Machine - since he did not buy it. Yes, there have been rumours that somebody claimed to have the original chair, but there was never any concrete proof of that. It seems to me that the original buyer would have restored it as a barber chair, since that's why he bought it. It would be easy for anyone else to pass off any old Berninghaus chair of this model as the one from the Time Machine - just by removing and adding a few parts and doing a few alterations. The person who bought the original chair most likely removed the non-original parts and discarded them. |

Posted At 15:06:12 04/11/2004 Francouis Thank you for that information. I had mentioned the melted globes in an earlier post..but don seemed to have no idea.Hopefully your info will make a few more things clear. The dvd has showed a lot of things that were not easy to see. Again thanks for responding. I to have talked with someone who said they talked to the chairs owner and that they were going to build a Full size around it. This has not happened yet. Guess we will have to wait and see!! Hey Bruce Guess this blows your last post out of the water!!! and bruce try to be original ok? |

Posted At 18:53:14 04/11/2004 Frankie, The reason I didn't know what you were refering to is that you said "recent" discoveries. The info about the melted globes was known years ago and the shift that Francois mentioned was first discussed months ago. Neither would I refer to as "recent". Now if you told us that a couple of weeks ago you spoke with the person responsable for actually changing the dates on the console and he told you how it was done, now that would be recent and interesting. |

Re: just wondering-francois (Currently 0 replies)
Posted At 18:58:28 04/11/2004 I have known about the lamp globes melting for about eight years. This seems to have occured after the console was removed from the Machine - when they were doing the close-up shots of the date display. To the best of my knowledge Don has known of this for quite some time as well. I find very doubtful the claim that someone has the chair in its original condition. The facts suggest the chair was bought by somebody who had no interest in the rest of the Machine. That was around 29 years ago. It was most likely restored to a barber chair long ago. Even if one were to find the original chair in its original condition, keep in mind that it is still a barber chair - one of the few parts that was not specifically built for the Machine. So one could not consider it as original as the parts which were conceived and built for the Machine. |

Posted At 19:52:12 04/11/2004 You are a closed book, Frank. I have wasted too much time with your posts. Was your original intent to make some new friends, here? If so, your approach was wrong from the moment you made your first post... against Delce. And if it is originality you want, why resort to using quotes that everyone has already read ? Originality? Practice what you preach, buddy! And you might consider that everyone's comments toward you would be far more positive if you could have been 'original' and used a few gracious manners in your opening posts on this board. Now some of us have a decidedly different impression of you... one that you created. Guess that blows your future posts out of the water!!! And Frank... try to be courteous... it is more original than you may believe. Ady.... Gary... he's all yours! Final word. |

Posted At 06:53:00 04/12/2004 Thank you Don and Francoius for the info. Francois i like the way you put the originality of the chair as "So one could not consider it as original as the parts which were conceived and built for the Machine." That puts things in a different light! Thanks Again! |

Posted At 07:51:07 04/12/2004 Hi Francois I wasn't aware of the crude date "stand-in" in the oval? I've only just cleary noticed the bayonet type fixing, which holds the lever in place. Though, that's mainly because i wasn't aware, what the end of the Lever truly looked liked until i saw Frankie's Lever, and read the artical! Great stuff!!! |
