I just sent Don some pictures to post on his site of my recently completed Masterpiece buildup. I will say that I am pleased with how it turned out. With no experience working with resin kits before, I was a little apprehensive. However i have done many scratch models before; ship models, mini guitars, and even a model of some famous ballparks. Anyway I figured that I had the main ingredients to do a decent job, namely patience and the right tools. Like many people who get this kit I was awed by the size of it. In fact I preferred a smaller version that could be easily displayed on a mantle. (I only found out about the smaller lunar kit after placing the order for the masterpiece version.) I decided to purchase this kit mainly with the idea of using it as a basis to build a scratch model on a smaller scale and I currently am building one at about 1/15 scale--the dish will be 4" wide. The masterpiece model and plans have been very helpful with this and I hope to have it done by the end of summer. As far as the quality of the kit is concerned I would say that overall I was happy. However if my experience is a typical one, and I am assuming from what I've read in the enthusiasts pages that it is, be prepared to adapt your own pieces somewhere along the line. Several parts needed to be entirely remade due to poor casting including the horizontal rail which was too limp to keep its shape once glued. I was told by masterpiece models that this is the nature of these kits. I suppose additional complaints to them might have gotten a new casting of this part but I didn't want to wait (it took about six weeks to get the kit). Anyway, the project took about 4 weeks to build in my spare time. I'm by no means a perfectionist or I'm sure it would have taken longer but I'm happy with the results. And now I have a time machine but no good place to put it. I'm thinking of purchasing the lunar version and putting the masterpiece model up for sale--any takers? |
